More than 100 people attended the February 3rd event organized by the Coalition, Avalon Nature Preserve, the Three Village Civic Association, Three Village Community Trust, Long Island Sound Partnership, Save the Sound, Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) and the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SOMAS). Stony Brook Harbor is listed as an “impaired” water body by USEPA and NYS DEC due to deteriorated water quality. Experts warned that sewer plants proposed by Gyrodyne and the nearby Stony Brook Meadows project would introduce new sources of pollution to Stony Brook Harbor, in direct conflict with Suffolk County’s Clean Water Plan, approved for implementation, which instead calls for a 37 percent REDUCTION in nitrogen pollution into the Harbor.
You can help by emailing our elected officials urging them to make sure that the concerns expressed by the Suffolk County Health Department and Town of Smithtown about the impacts to Stony Brook Harbor are respected, and that they should take immediate steps to make sure these two sewer plants proposed for the Stony Brook Harbor Watershed are not approved!
