Recently, the community’s fight to preserve Flowerfield Fairgrounds for future generations entered a new phase, and your help is needed.
Even as New York State and Suffolk County work together to preserve Flowerfield Fairgrounds by paying fair market value for the property using the State’s Environmental Protection Fund, Gyrodyne is pressing forward to have its development plan approved based on a flawed and incomplete environmental review.
While the traffic nightmare that would result from the Gyrodyne plan and the damage it would cause to Stony Brook Harbor are obvious failures, the environmental review of Gyrodyne’s plan does not include any plans to protect the community from the devastating impacts that extreme weather events like the federally declared disaster on August 19, 2024 would cause if the development moves forward – and experts are warning that such events are expected to be more common in the future.
The following video highlights the connection between the stormwater runoff from the Gyrodyne site and flooding in the community. This issue must be addressed in the environmental review of Gyrodyne’s project.
For this reason, the Coalition has filed an appeal of a decision by a lower court in the lawsuit originally filed by the Village of Head of the Harbor and neighbors of the property to force consideration of the significantly increased impact that extreme weather events will have on the community if Flowerfield Fairgrounds is bulldozed and replaced by hard surfaces that do not absorb rainwater.
The community’s strong support to date has made the battle to preserve Flowerfield Fairgrounds possible, but pushing forward with the lawsuit will be very expensive. Won’t you please consider joining your neighbors in making a financial contribution to support the fight to preserve Flowerfield Fairgrounds?
Thank you,
