PROGRESS IN BATTLE TO PROTECT BULL RUN FARM

DEVELOPER AGREES TO CONSIDER PRESERVATION OF FARM AS OPEN SPACE

COUNTY LEGISLATURE EXPECTED TO AUTHORIZE APPRAISAL ON OCTOBER 15TH

After unsuccessful attempts in court to force approval of a controversial plan to build a massive commercial assisted living facility in the rural area along Mills Pond Road, a local developer is now involved in discussions with Suffolk County and Town of Smithtown planning officials that could lead to the preservation of Bull Run Farm as open space.

The developer has signed a letter required in order for Suffolk County to move forward with an appraisal to establish a value for the property, a necessary step for the County to make an offer to purchase the farm property for preservation as open space.

On October 6th, the Suffolk County Legislature’s Environment, Parks and Agriculture Committee will consider whether to advance a procedural motion at the Legislature’s next General Meeting to authorize an appraisal of the property. If the Committee signs off on the appraisal, a procedural motion will be considered by the full Legislature at its General meeting on October 15th.

Dear Legislator [Name],

Development of a massive commercial assisted living facility on Bull Run Farm would destroy the rural character of the Mills Pond Historic District and the Saint James community.

Thankfully, Suffolk County is engaged in discussions with the developer about the preservation of Bull Run Farm as open space.

Please support the procedural motion to authorize an appraisal of Bull Run Farm when it is discussed by the Environment, Parks and Agriculture Committee on October 6th and considered by the full Legislature at the General meeting on October 15th.

Thank you.
